It’s a matter of Kismet.
A journey through fate, patterns, and meaning.
Kismet – A Turkish-origin word meaning fate, destiny, or what is meant to be.
In Turkish culture, Kismet shapes life’s path—the things that happen and the ones that slip away.
This project started unexpectedly—I was wandering through Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar when I became fascinated by the intricate Iznik tile motifs. At the same time, I kept thinking about the word "Kismet." When I thought about how to visualize this idea, the first image that came to my mind was a Turkish coffee cup. Maybe because kismet is often read in coffee grounds? Or perhaps it is because the motifs on those cups reminded me of traditional Iznik tiles? Honestly, I’m not sure which idea came first—it all blended very well.

Inspired by this, I designed my tile-based typography for "It’s a Matter of Kismet," carefully constructing each letter from traditional motifs. This eventually led me to explore animation, something I had never tried before. It was a challenge, but I loved the process!
"It’s a matter of Kismet."
Some Kismet is found. Some Kismet is missed.
To take it further, I created a poster imagining this piece as part of an exhibition, blending traditional Turkish art with contemporary typography.
